McKinley's cafeteria offers a "fresh from the Farmer's Market salad bar" as an alternative to hot lunches. Students may choose from a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, cheeses, meats and breads. The salad bar also costs $3.00 and is part of our Health Champions Program.
Students who bring their lunch also eat in the cafeteria. Milk and juice are available for purchase.
We ask that you pay for lunches at the main office in advance or send your child to school with lunch. We discourage the students from carrying money in their pockets. Delivering lunch should be on special occasions, not on a daily basis. We cannot interrupt classroom time for lunch deliveries. Remember, no candy or sodas, please.

On September 17, 1997, the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District, Food and Nutrition Services Department launched its first Farmer's Market Salad Bar at McKinley Elementary School as part of the school's regular lunch program. Presently, Farmer's Market Salads are offered in all of our schools as an alternative to the hot lunch. The Farmer's Market Salad Bar offers high quality fruits and vegetables purchased directly from farmers at the Wednesday and Saturday Santa Monica Farmer's Markets. The Salad Bar adheres to the National School Lunch Program guidelines by offering all five food groups - fruits, vegetables, bread/ bread alternate, meat/meat alternate and milk.
This unique school lunch is no longer just a salad bar it has become a Program. Under the umbrella of the Farmer's Market Salad Bar has sprung many nutrition education programs including school gardens.
The Farmer's Market Salad Bar has been awarded the Restaurant Hospitality's Best Kids Menu in America and the California School Board Association's Golden Bell Award.
